Fresh Start Finance Program

No Credit Isn't Bad Credit. It's a Starting Point.

Researching no credit car loans in Moses Lake? With no score on file, a lender forms its view from your income, the bills you already handle and the money you put toward the car.

No score isn't a low score

Scores are calculated from credit history. If no lender or card company has ever reported an account under your name, the bureaus may hold no file on you, or one too slim to score. Back in 2017 the CFPB put the number of Americans without a traditional credit score at roughly 45 million (CFPB), so you have plenty of company.

Some lenders may also look beyond the bureaus: rent you've paid on schedule, a phone plan, or the deposits and withdrawals in your checking account, as signs that you keep up with what you owe (same CFPB source).

Six moves toward your first car

  1. See whether a file existsRequest your free reports through AnnualCreditReport.com. If an account you never opened shows up, dispute it.
  2. Line up insuranceDriving in Washington takes liability coverage (RCW 46.30.020), and the lender may ask you to insure the car itself as well. Get a quote while you're still browsing.
  3. Collect proof you pay on timeA lease with rent receipts, phone bills or a few months of bank statements may matter to a lender that considers them.
  4. Take the quiz or callLet us know it's your first car, or ring (509) 765-4517. The finance team will spell out the documents lenders usually expect from a first-time buyer.
  5. Your application goes outWith your go-ahead, we pass it to lenders that consider buyers with no credit history. Approval and terms come from them alone.
  6. Choose a car that fitsIf a lender approves, stay inside its budget. Our used cars under $20,000 come from across the Moses Lake campus.

Lenders decide, and approval isn't guaranteed.

What a lender leans on when there's no score

  • Income you can prove, including a job you just started; a signed offer letter helps. Regulation B (12 CFR 1002.6) won't let a lender discount part-time or pension pay because of its source, though it can judge the amount and how long it should continue.
  • Your time on the current job and at your current address
  • Money or a trade put toward the price, which means less to finance (CFPB)
  • A co-signer or co-buyer with established credit. The FTC notes co-signers take on equal responsibility for the contract, so pick someone who understands what that means.
  • A car priced in proportion to what you earn

Words on a first car loan

WordIn plain terms
Credit historyThe record of accounts reported under your name. If nothing has been reported, there may be no history yet.
Credit scoreA figure scoring companies calculate from that history. No history can mean no score.
Alternative dataRecords outside a credit report, such as rent or phone payments, that some lenders may weigh (CFPB).
Hard inquiryThe credit pull that happens when you apply. Several auto loan pulls inside a 14 to 45 day window generally get scored once (CFPB).
Down paymentMoney or trade-in value you put toward the car at signing, which lowers the balance (CFPB).

Will a first car loan be reported?

Ask the lender, before you sign, whether it reports to the three nationwide credit bureaus. If it does, this loan may be the first account on your file, and each payment, prompt or late, will show there. Once the loan opens, pull your reports at AnnualCreditReport.com and confirm it's listed correctly.

Costs beyond the monthly bill

Insurance, registration, gas and maintenance all ride along with a first car. Each used car from our lot includes two oil changes and two tire rotations at no cost (rotations only on an electric car), and it has passed our 137-point inspection. A 3-month / 3,000-mile limited warranty covers it, the 3-day / 300-mile exchange applies, and its CARFAX report is yours free.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a car loan in Moses Lake with no credit history?

You can apply, and the lender makes the call. Without a score to go by, lenders study your income, your debts, your down payment and the car you pick, and some will ask for a co-signer.

Is no credit better or worse than bad credit?

Neither is simply better. Bad credit points to trouble in the past; no credit points to almost nothing. Lenders weigh them differently, and each one has its own rules.

Will a lender want a co-signer on my first car?

Sometimes. The FTC notes that a buyer without much credit history may need one, and that a co-signer carries equal responsibility for the contract (FTC).

What paperwork do I need for my first car?

A driver's license, proof of income and address, and insurance before you drive. Call (509) 765-4517 and the finance team will tell you whatever else your lender wants.

Does Toyota have a program for recent college graduates?

Toyota's College Rebate applies to eligible new Toyotas financed or leased through Toyota Financial Services, for qualifying students and recent graduates who can show a job. Toyota Financial Services still makes the credit decision; see our College Rebate page.

Does applying for a first loan cost me points?

Applying lets lenders pull your credit report, which can dip a score a little. Auto loan pulls within a 14 to 45 day window generally count as one (CFPB).

Can paying rent on time count toward a car loan?

Some lenders may consider bills you already pay, like rent or a phone plan, when your credit file is slim (CFPB). Bring the records; the lender decides whether to use them.
